Wood ducks are common enough that most people have stopped seeing them. I started going back to the same water in 2023 to find out what a year actually looks like on one bird, and the answer turned out to be almost everything. Drakes in full plumage in May and the same birds looking ordinary by August. Pairs in April. Birds sitting up in trees, where nobody thinks to look for a duck. Still going.
